Rayon is a popularly produced man
made fiber which is simulated to resemble other natural fibers. It is used
for a number of domestic and industrial products. The fiber is composed of
pure cellulose. It is made form cellulose that has been reformed or
regenerated. The fiber is produced from naturally occurring polymers and so
it is not a synthetic fiber.
There are two basic types of rayon that are commercially produced. These
are:
Rayon is a very versatile fiber and can be easily dyed. The fabric is
soft, cool, comfortable, smooth and does not absorb heat. The fiber is quite
strong and durable.
Applications
Rayon is used in a wide variety of products, across industries. Some of the
applications are:
- Apparel eg. dresses, jackets, lingerie, linings
- Furnishings eg. bed sheets, blankets, upholstery
- Industrial use
- Feminine hygiene products
