Glass fiber is inert and highly flame resistant. It is used for home furnishings and various industrial applications.
Manufacturing Process
Glass fiber is made from a combination of minerals and other substances including Silica, Limestone, Feldspar, Boric Acid.
The ingredients are heated in an electric furnace under very temperature, leading to fusion of the ingredients. The molten glass is extruded through spinnerets. The process creates two different types of fibers, filament and staple fibers.
Applications
Glass fiber is used in a number of applications including:
- Curtains
- Draperies
- Flame Resistant Fabrics
- Automobiles
- Space Suits
- Optical Fibers
