Man-made fibers can be obtained
from either natural raw materials or from synthetic chemicals. These fibers
are used in a number of industries including home furnishings etc.
Types of Man Made Fibers
Man made fibers can be sourced from
- Mineral fibers eg. glass fibers
- Metallic fibers, obtained from refining of and mining of metals
including aluminum etc.
- Rubber fibers obtained from sap of the rubber tree.
Man made fibers can be further divided into synthetic fibers, that are
made from synthetic chemicals. These fibers are manufactured from synthetic
sources. The properties of these fibers resemble those made from natural
sources. For example acrylic is often used as a synthetic replacement of
wool.
