After a hard day's work, we all need to have rest. We get comfort in our bedrooms
and that's why, we all put in much effort to make our bedrooms soothing and
relaxing. Not only efforts, we also invest a good amount of money to buy
everything that goes to make our bedrooms comfortable.
Bed sheets are one of the most important
textile furnishings which decides whether we'll have sound sleep or not. So,
it is useful to have some tips on buying bed sheets.
- Measure your bed to know the right size of bed sheet that will fit
it.
- Measure your mattress too. If it is of standard size such as regular,
king or queen size, then simply buy the similar sizes available for
bedsheets. However, if it's size is different then you might have to buy
one size larger or more to fit your mattress.
- Many manufacturers give added features in mattresses such as pillow
tops on one side or both the sides of the mattress. If so, you should
buy bigger sized bedsheets as the mattress is wider than standard ones.
However, you'll save the money on pillow
covers, that you'll not need to buy.
- See the labels to know the thread count or TPI of bedsheets. TPI is
the number of threads per square inch. Higher thread count means better
quality. However, too high thread count is also not desirable as the
individual threads then get thinner and the
fabric also loses its ability to
breath. Its better to have a bed sheet with a thread count between 175
and 250.
- Choose bed sheet fabrics according to the climatic conditions and the
weather of your place. Cotton fabric bedsheets are good for hot climates
and summer season whereas flannel or silk fabric bedsheets are good for
cold climates and winter season.
- Bed
sheets made of cotton fabric are most
comfortable and popular too. If going for cotton bedsheets, try to buy
Sateen bed sheets made of Egyptian cotton or PIMA cotton. They are the
best- soft and durable.
- Cotton blends like cotton polyester blends are economical and also
warmer. They are also good for cooler climates. They remain wrinkle free
too.
- For colder climates, flannel bed sheets are considered best,
especially the cotton flannel bedsheets. To examine their quality,
instead of thread counts, look for their weight which is measured in
ounces per square yard. A good quality flannel bed sheet will weigh 4
oz. or more. Also check whether they have tightly woven
yarns or not. For this, hold the sheet
up to the light and if you can't see through it, its tightly woven and
you can very well buy it.
- If you want to have luxurious feel then buy a bed sheet made up of
silk fabric. Those made up of 100%
mulberry silk are best. To ensure its quality, look for a thread count
of more than 400 and a momme count of about 19. Momme count is the
standard measurement of the weight of silk. Bed sheets with a momme
weight lower than 12 are not very durable. So, go for a momme count
between 12-19.
